Obama '09: Strength of Our Economy Can Be Measured Directly by Strength of Middle Class

Ten days after his first inauguration in January 2009, President Barack Obama announced the “Middle Class Working Families Task Force,” chaired by Vice President Joe Biden, to address the stagnant median household income squeezing America’s middle class.

According to CSPAN, the task force was created to “develop economic policies to raise the living standards of middle-class families.”

During the White House ceremony announcing the task force, Obama said, “Because the strength of our economy can be measured directly by the strength of our middle class… That’s why I’ve created the Task Force on Middle Class Working Families.”
