UFC Heavyweight Matt Mitrione Talks Power with Breitbart Sports

Mashantucket, CT— Matt Mitrione dispatched Derrick Lewis in 41 fast seconds in a barrage of brutality at UFC Fight Night on Friday at Foxwoods Resort Casino. The victory propelled Meathead’s record to 8-3, with all of his fights taking place inside the octagon.

Breitbart Sports asked the heavyweight at the postfight presser if, at 36, he feels a sense of urgency to fight ranked fighters and make a championship run. Mitrione cited the late-career success of Randy Couture and Mark Hunt as evidence that strength and power, the currency of the heavyweight division, fades later than quickness, agility, and other attributes more heavily relied upon in the lighter weight classes.

The former NFL defensive lineman was also asked if his octagon age might be younger than his actual age because he entered mixed-martial arts relatively late. He countered that the rigors of his previous profession grinded away at his body, too.

Mitrione reasoned, “Power’s the last thing to leave you … That’s why Randy [Couture] could fight ’til he was 75.”
