Rand Paul: US Didn't Create Thousand-Year-Old ISIS Conflict

On Wednesday’s broadcast of Fox News Channel’s “Hannity,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) reacted to President Barack Obama’s address that laid out his policy on combatting the threat of ISIS in the Middle East.

According to Paul, it was important to understand how this threat came to be.  He said the United States is not to blame for this thousand-year-old conflict, which he defined to be motivated by radical Islam.

“I think you have a good point. I don’t disagree with it. The only thing I would say is that we didn’t create the conflict. The conflict’s been going on for a thousand years. The conflict is between a bizarre barbaric form of Islam versus the rest of Islam. It’s Sunni versus Shiite. It’s a long ongoing war. We didn’t create it. But we did allow a festering of chaos when we toppled the secular dictators. There have been four secular dictators that have gone — Gadhafi, Mubarak, Assad maybe and Hussein. Every time the secular has failed, chaos has risen and radical Islam has become dominant. Radical Islam is our enemy in all of those countries. So, we need to understand how we got there in order to figure out how to fix it.”
