Watch: VA GOP Senate Hopeful's Ad Supporting 'Redskins' Name

In an advertisement that aired in some markets during ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” match-up between the Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys, Virginia Republican Senate hopeful Ed Gillespie, the former chairman of the Republican National Committee, vowed his opposition to legislation that would force Washington Redskins to change the team’s name.

“I’ll oppose the anti-Redskins bill. Let’s focus on creating jobs, raising take-home pay and making our nation safer. And let the Redskins handle what to call their team,” Gillespie said.

Recent polls suggest Gillespie has a lot of ground to make up between now and Election Day if he hopes to defeat incumbent Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA).
