Elizabeth Warren Flashback: Shutdowns ‘Last Resort’ For Election Losers

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) railed against government shutdowns in two floor speeches back in 2013, declaring them “hostage tactics,” “the last resort for those who can’t otherwise win their fights through elections,” a last gasp of those who cannot cope with the realities of our democracy,” and dubbing supporters of a shutdown “reckless and extremist factions” “who seem to rejoice in anarchy.”

On September 30, 2013 speech, she stated “in a democracy, hostage tactics are the last resort for those who can’t otherwise win their fights through elections, can’t win their fights in Congress…For this right-wing minority, hostage-taking is all they have left – a last gasp of those who cannot cope with the realities of our democracy.”

Later that year, on October 3rd, she argued that Republicans who supported a shutdown were those who have forced us to the brink…those who seem to rejoice in anarchy, and “those who have salivated at the
chance to shut down our government because their extremist views have left them disconnected from the experiences of the American people.” She further described supporters of the shutdown as “reckless and extremist factions.”
