Democratic strategist James Carville, who is supporting Democratic presidential candidate former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, criticized “complicit” Democrats “piling on the [Representative] Trey Gowdy (R-SC), Ken Starr, Breitbart, Drudge message” while responding to a question on Clinton’s favorability numbers on Monday’s “All In with Chris Hayes” on MSNBC.

Carville began by saying of Democratic candidate Senator Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) appeal, “I’m older, so you’ve got to explain to me. We’ve had two enormously successful Democratic administrations. The administration of President Clinton, and now the administration of President Obama. We’ve had a disastrous republican administration in the middle of all this. The Republican Party is cracking up right in front of our eyes. So about 47% of the Democratic Party’s answer to this is, hey let’s nominate somebody that’s not even Democrat. It utterly makes no sense to me. So, somebody will have to explain it.”

When asked if he was surprised by Sanders’ level of support, Carville responded, “I’m more than surprised. I’m vexed as why, after two really successful presidencies, and a really unsuccessful Republican presidency, why would the Democrats nominate someone who’s not even a Democrat? I’m a little vexed, at some level.”

He added, “I think that Secretary Clinton has put out very detailed plans on reform, on Wall Street reform, on manufacturing, on ISIS, and everything else. I mean, look, nothing is perfect in this world, but if you look at the last two Democratic administrations, boy, I mean it’s been some real sense of accomplishment here. And you look at Dodd-Frank, there’s real accomplishment, and we’re going to just throw all that over the side and turn to some hybrid socialism or something. I don’t buy it. I just — I really don’t buy it.” He further said that “we don’t need a revolution right now.”

Carville then addressed Clinton’s favoribility numbers, “Well, you know what, when that started, every [cockamamie] lie, from Richard Mellon Scaife, to the Wall Street Journal editorial page, to Ken Starr, to the Benghazi Committee, which the stated effect, was to drive her numbers down, when none of it has amounted to anything. And then you have Senator Sanders piling on this. What do you expect? The media, and the Republican Party, and certain people in the Democratic Party, have just gone on, and piled on all of this stupidity, which never amounts to anything. So, is it possible that this would have the effect that [Representative] Trey Gowdy (R-SC) and company — the desired effect that they said? Well, maybe it has. I think it’s going to change, and I think — her campaign, it’s going to see over a period of time, people will see this. But I’ve been going through this, Chris, since 1992, when I started the whole goofy thing. And why are Democrats piling on the Trey Gowdy, Ken Starr, Breitbart, Drudge message? I have no idea why they’re complicit in this, when, it — to me, it’s utterly ridiculous. But yeah, so if you go out, gee look, after all this piling on, we’ve knocked ten points off of her favorable. Well, wow wee chickadee dee.”
