On Friday, HBO’s “Real Time” host Bill Maher said, “we do not have the same values as some of these people coming over from the Middle East.” And that in Islam “the moderates don’t win.”

Maher stated, while discussing the New Year’s attacks in several European cities, “[I]t’s easy to say ‘Islamophobia.’ It’s easy to say, ‘Oh, you’re being xenophobic, you’re racist.’ But, I think the people all over the world who have been facing this deserve a little better than that. I mean, there is a clash of cultures here. There is a reason why those attacks happened, because we do not have the same values as some of these people coming over from the Middle East. That’s just the truth. And especially about women, and I don’t understand why liberals in this country don’t get behind that. Their — one of the key planks of liberalism is women should be treated equally.”

He later added that he doesn’t think Muslims in the US are the problem, and “[M]y problem with Islam is that the moderates don’t win.”

Maher concluded, “I’m just saying, there is a civil war going on in this culture. We should stand with the people who want to live in the 21st century, not the ones who want to live in the seventh.”
