Dem Sen Durbin: Many Americans ‘Can’t Swallow’ a Woman as President

Wednesday on Chicago’s WGN radio’s “The Steve Cochran Show,” Senate Majority Whip Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was caught in a tight race with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump because many Americans “can’t swallow” a “woman aspiring to the highest office in the land.”

Durbin said, “You also have the fact that isn’t articulated very often, here is a woman aspiring to the highest office in the land and there are people who will never say the words but they aren’t buying it. They can’t swallow it. It’s something—”

He added, “So that is an overlay that nobody would have guessed in this campaign. And it’s an interesting thing. I don’t know if you have ever heard of this book, ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ a fellow named Vance wrote it. I just started reading it. Fascinating book and it really taps into what the heck is going on with white males, particularly why they are leaving the Democrats in droves, and you know, I want to know the answer to that.”
