Gohmert: AHCA ‘Was Based on a Lie’ — Parliamentarian Doesn’t Rule Until Bill Is Sent to the Senate

Saturday on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends Weekend,” Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) argued the American Health Care Act, which was purported to be the first part of repealing President Barack Obama’s 2010 Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, was based on a lie.

Gohmert said the lie was that this was the best means to repeal Obamacare given the rules of the U.S. Senate would require a 60-vote majority as opposed to a simple 51-vote majority according to the U.S. Senate parliamentarian.

However, according to Gohmert, the parliamentarian would not make such a ruling without a bill being passed by the House first and then sent to the U.S. Senate for consideration.

“[L]et me tell you — this bill that they were bringing before us was based on a lie,” Gohmert said. “I don’t know where the lie came from. I don’t know if someone in our leadership created the lie. Now, it may be quite possible somebody lied to them, and they just accepted it. Listen now, the lie was this — we can’t do what you guys want to do because parliamentarian will not allow us to do it. Now, we can’t check with the parliamentarian until we pass the bill in the House, send it to the Senate, then the parliamentarian rules. The parliamentarian never rules.”That’s a lie.”
