Dem Rep Nadler on Trump Criticisms of Press: ‘You Look Back at the Nazis, Who Talked About the Lügenpresse’

During a House Judiciary Committee forum on Monday, Representative Jerry Nadler (D-NY) drew a comparison between President Trump’s criticisms of the press and Nazis referring to the lügenpresse or lying press.

Nadler said, [relevant remarks begin around 1:39:15] that over the last half-century, the country has gotten used to and reliant on “a more responsible press.”

He continued, “[N]ow we see the statistics that Gallup says just 27% of the American public expresses strong confidence in newspapers, including 46% of Democrats and 13% of Republicans. And you can track that to attacks on the press by people like President Trump and by others. In recent years, I think, especially the conservative [media] — conservatives have tried to disparage the press, and they’ve had some success.”

He further stated, “And you look at other societies — the precedent now, where the president of the United States keeps talking about the lying [press], about the fake news and everything’s fake news. You look back at the Nazis who talked about the lügenpresse, the lying press, to destroy the faith in any information, other than from President Trump or his apologists or whoever.
