Sessions: Charlottesville Car Attack Could Be Civil Rights Violation, Hate Crime

During an interview with NBC News on Wednesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions stated that the Charlottesville car attack could be a violation of federal civil rights laws or a hate crime.

Sessions said that the DOJ will work with state officials in Virginia and federal charges don’t have to filed right away, but will be brought when justified by the investigation.

He added that the car attack could be a violation of federal civil rights laws under 18, U.S.C., Section 245 or a hate crime under 18, U.S.C, Section 249, and there could be other federal charges brought.

Sessions also stated that the DOJ is working the case “intensely.” And vowed that the case will be “fully investigated and thoroughly prosecuted.”
