Thursday, on CBS’s “This Morning,” Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) said he does not want President Donald Trump to come to Charlottesville and continue with speeches that “are dividing us.”
When asked about Trump’s remarks about the violence in Charlottesville, McAuliffe said, “That was not leadership what I saw. And as — I went out and did it myself, represented not only Virginia, but I thought where America was. Those remarks are dividing people. We cannot be dividing people.”
He added, in response to a question on whether he wants the president to come to Charlottesville, “Listen, if the president wants to come to Charlottesville and address our citizens, talk about how we can heal as a nation and how we need to be moving forward, that is what the president of the United States should do. I do not want the president to come here to continue on with the speeches that he’s given the last couple days. Those speeches are dividing us. People now feel comfortable, Norah, that they can come into a city — you know, they used to wear hoods, now they don’t even wear hoods, and spew their hatred and bigotry and bias. There is no place for that in this country. And anyone who incites that or encourages and allows this type of behavior, let me be clear, you have no place in Virginia. We do not want you, and I’ll be honest with you, we don’t want you here in America.”
