Dem Rep Lofgren: Trump’s Behavior Has Problem Signs Like Those of an Older Person ‘Suffering From Mental Decline’

On Thursday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “All In,” Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) argued that President Trump’s behavior shows signs that are worrisome to anyone who has experience with an older person suffering from mental decline.

Lofgren said, “[A] lot of people are concerned about the president’s behavior. He seems to lack impulse control. He swings from topic to topic. Any of us who’s had an older person that we know suffering from mental decline can see certain signs that worry us, repetition, someone who seems lost where they are, when he was in Israel, saying we ‘just got back from the Middle East.’ Did he not know that Frederick Douglass had died, or was he confused? I think that if this were an obvious physical disability, let’s say a massive heart attack, the vice president and the Cabinet would be getting the advice of medical professionals. Similarly, with these questions, they should get advice from medical professionals on whether this is the president just being an odd person or whether there’s a problem here.”

Anchor Chris Hayes, who had criticized “armchair diagnoses” of the president earlier in the segment, told Lofgren that it seems like she’s medicalizing her distaste with the president’s personality.

Lofgren countered, “This is for the vice president under the 25th Amendment. … And the Cabinet, all of whom have been selected by the president, to discharge their obligations under the Constitution to make sure that there isn’t a problem with the president’s capacity to serve.”
