Matthews: Gun Control ‘Almost Like the Middle East’ Where ‘You Do the Right Thing, You Get Killed’ Politically

On Tuesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Hardball,” host Chris Matthews referenced people who were voted out of Congress for supporting gun control and stated the issue is “almost like the Middle East…you do the right thing, you get killed.”

After Washington Governor Jay Inslee (D) referenced voting for the Assault Weapons Ban in 1994, Matthews stated, “How’d that turn out for you? You got beaten on that.”

Inslee argued that the law “did have an appreciable impact of reducing some of the mass shootings. Because this has become sort of a badge of honor for folks who want to cause mass destruction. We’re seeing this over and over and over again. So, this — that will be one of the things to do.”

Matthews stated, “It’s almost like the Middle East. If you sign a treaty and you’re Anwar Sadat or you’re Yitzhak Rabin, you do the right thing, you get killed. You lost on the issue. Tom Foley lost on the issue. And you watch Ryan, who was always sold to me. I have never bought the Paul Ryan argument that he’s so great. He, right out there today, said, I’m not going to do anything on gun control. I’m not touching the weapons. He just said it.”
