Thune: ‘The 60-vote Threshold Protects Republicans More Times Historically Than It Does Democrats’

Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom,” Sen. John Thune (R-SD) said he understood President Donald Trump’s frustration with the filibuster rule, but it has “historically” protected Republicans more than Democrats.

Thune said, “Well, the president is right about one point and that’s the Democrats’ goal is to obstruct. They think it’s to their political advantage as we head into the mid-term elections. But you got to think about this the other way, if God forbid they won the Senate in November and could pass whatever they want at 51 votes, we would have a very open borders immigration policy.”

He added, “The 60-vote threshold protects Republicans more times historically than it does Democrats. I understand his frustration. We share it too, but that is why we need to have Democrats willing to do the right thing for our country and not just the political thing in the middle of an election year.”
