Newt Gingrich went to bat for Donald Trump Wednesday after Trump’s nationalistic foreign policy speech at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Gingrich fended off attacks on Trump by the elite media. Trump made “America First” the theme of his speech and said that it would be the theme of his administration. Trump railed against the incompetence of our foreign policy leaders and lack of strategy in the Middle East and elsewhere. Trump also stressed “peace,” which could embolden the neoconservative narrative that Trump does not wish to enter into a war-like situation with Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

Trump thanked Gingrich for his support.

Gingrich’s comments on Trump here on the pages of Breitbart News in December went viral and provided credibility to Trump before the Iowa caucus:

I think he represents a different era” in the same conservative movement, Gingrich said. “The system has become so incompetent and outrageously bureaucratic. The centers of power are so, so in New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, that the whole rest of the country is in rebellion. And people are looking for somebody who can kick down the doors.

It’s a very deep, very real movement.
