SALT LAKE CITY, Utah —A furry member of the Pence family passed away this week, and the traveling press on the Republican vice presidential nominee’s campaign trail offered sincere condolences for the passing of the family’s dog.

The Pence family dog passed away on Tuesday night. His name was Maverick and he was a beagle.

Pence tweeted out news of the dog’s passing with the message, “Heavy hearts today. Our beagle of 13 years passed away quietly last night. Rest In Peace, Maverick. We will miss you.”

A photo of the dog with Gov. and Mrs. Pence was posted along with the message.

Upon learning of the dog’s passing, members of the small traveling press group following Pence on the campaign trail offered their condolences with a card. The Pences were sincerely thankful for the condolences.

Pence made campaign stops in three states on Wednesday: Reno, Nevada; Salt Lake City, Utah and Colorado Springs, Colorado.
