Texas State Senator Wendy Davis will not filibuster a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks and make abortion clinics safer should the bill make it to the floor the Texas state Senate a second time.
“You can’t have a 30-day filibuster,” Davis spokesman Rick Svatora said, according to LifeNews. “The point is [Republicans] mismanaged things so badly the first time around it allowed a filibuster to occur. The Lt. Gov. [David Dewhurst] has pledged he won’t allow that to happen this time around.”
As LifeNews notes, the bill, which was filed on Monday when Texas Gov. Rick Perry called a second special session of the Texas legislature, would “ban abortions after 20 weeks and hold abortion clinics accountable by making them meet basic health and safety standards that have closed facilities in other states that are unable to comply.”
In addition, the bill would also require “abortion clinics to meet the same health and safety regulations as an ambulatory surgical center, requires a doctor providing abortions to secure admitting privileges at a nearby hospital, and lastly, requires a doctor to personally administer the abortion-inducing drugs to the patient.”
Davis won the hearts of pro-abortion liberals and their allies in the mainstream media when she spoke for nearly 13 hours last week to filibuster the first bill at the close of the first special session. On Tuesday, when pro-lifers in Texas were singing “Amazing Grace,” the pro-abortion crowd that has Davis their heroine yelled, “Hail Satan!”
The Texas legislature will reconvene on July 9.
