Gabby Giffords to Maine Raising Money for Gubernatorial Candidate Supporting Gun Control

On August 9 Gabby Giffords will “[try] to resurrect gun control” by appearing in Maine to raise money for gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud (D).

Michaud is currently the U.S. Rep. for Maine’s 2nd District.

According to the Associated Press, Michaud says he and Giffords formed a friendship as “conservative ‘blue dog’ Democrats” during their time together in Congress, and he stands with her in pushing for more gun control now in the area of background checks.

He supports expanding background checks so that every gun purchaser – retail or private – is required to go through the same checks that Santa Barbara gunman Elliot Rodger, Fort Hood gunman Ivan Lopez, Arapahoe High School gunman Karl Halverson Pierson, DC Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis, and Aurora theater gunman James Holmes went through in order to acquire their guns.

Maine Republican Party spokesman David Sorensen responded to the news of Giffords coming to the state by saying, “[Michaud’s] been telling constituents in northern Maine that he is a pro-gun rights candidate… [but] it doesn’t get any less pro-gun than… raising money with Gabby Giffords.”
