Hezbollah Helping Assad's Forces in 'Most Intense' Battle of Syrian Conflict

On May 19, the Syrian military, working with Hezbollah fighters, began taking the city of Qusayr back from opposition forces.

According to The New York Times, it was one of “the war’s most intense ground battles,” and it brought Hezbollah and Iran’s support of Bashar al-Assad into clear view.

In Qusayr, the forces aligned with Shiite-led Iran were pitted “against the Sunni Muslim states and their Western allies.” This means Hezbollah was up against the al-Nursa Front in a struggle that Hezbollah supporters view as a life or death struggle for Shiite villages in Syria.

Qusayr is located in Homs province, control of which is considered crucial to deciding the future of Assad’s regime.
