Cairo, June 8 (Petra) —- Egypt’s new president Abdel Fattah al Sisi was sworn in on Sunday after his victory in last month’s elections in which he won 97 percent of the vote.
The former army chief took the oath as president before the Higher Constitutional Court at a Cairo suburb in a ceremony attended by over 100 top officials and figures, including interim president Adli Mansour, prime minister Ibrahim Mehleb, the Grand Mufti of al Azhar, the country’s higher religious authority, the pope of Alexandria and members of the committee that drafted the country’s new constitution.
The court’s official spokesman, Maher Sami, said during the ceremony that the June 30 revolution that toppled former president Mohammad Mursi was the revolt of a people “sick and tired of the destruction and repression of a regime.. that tore the country apart.”
Also speaking during the ceremony, the Constitutional Court’s first deputy, Anwar al Aasi, congratulated Sisi and welcomed the return of interim president Mansour to his former post as constitutional court chief.
Sisi later drove to al Ittihadiyeh presidential palace in the capital, where he and the interim president signed a document for the handover of power in an inauguration ceremony attended by foreign leaders, including Arab and African monarchs, heads of state and senior officials.
