The lawyer for Florida State quarterback and Heisman Trophy frontrunner Jameis Winston said the open rape case against Winston will negatively impact his chances of winning the Heisman.
Tim Jansen, the lawyer, reportedly met with prosecutors after state attorney Willie Meggs announced that it would take over two weeks to decide whether to press charges.
“We expressed our concerns that the delay would affect Mr. Winston’s reputation, voters in the Heisman and Florida State’s ability to go to the national championship game,” Jansen told ESPN on Wednesday. “We’re hoping this cloud can be lifted sooner rather than later.”
The Associated Press polled a small sample of voters who said they would still consider voting for Winston even if the case against him is still open.
The alleged victim’s family has accused the Tallahassee Police Department of threatening the alleged victim if she went forward with charges last January. They claim Winston raped the alleged victim while Winston’s camp has said the sex was consensual after Winston’s DNA matched the sample from the victim’s underwear.
