Amazon to Make Sunday Deliveries Using the Postal Service

The United States Postal Service and Amazon.com have reached a deal for the impoverished agency to deliver Amazon.com shipments on Sunday.  Earlier this year, the distressed USPS failed to garner Congressional approval to stop delivering mail on Saturdays, a move designed to ease their financial losses.

Last year the postal service lost $16 million.

The deal will take effect immediately, just in time for Christmas. Sunday delivery will be limited to Los Angeles and the New York metropolitan area.  The delivery areas will expand for 2014 to include Dallas, Houston, New Orleans and Phoenix.

Mr. Donahoe, the postmaster general, said the deal with Amazon was part of the Postal Service’s attempt to alter its business model. That effort includes increasing package delivery to take advantage of the growth of e-commerce, streamlining the work force and eliminating mail delivery on Saturdays.

The postal service plans to make arrangements with other online merchants.
