Jose Canseco Blows Off Middle Finger while Cleaning Gun

Jose Canseco blew off the middle finger of his left hand Tuesday afternoon while cleaning his handgun at home. The former Oakland Athletics slugger was taken to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, where doctors said that no matter what they do, he will never have full use of his finger again. Canseco’s fiancee, Leila Knight, tweeted from Canseco’s account on Tuesday night as he was in surgery that he would be okay.

Las Vegas Metro police Lt. Mark Reddon reported that the cops responded to a call of an accidental shooting Tuesday afternoon; Canseco told them he had been cleaning his gun when it went off.

Canseco, famed for being one of the Bash Brothers along with Mark McGwire on the Oakland Athletics in the late 1980s and early 1990s, played 17 years in the majors, hammering 462 home runs and competing in six All-Star games. After leaving Oakland, he played for the Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, and Chicago White Sox.

Following his career, Canseco admitted use of performance-enhancing drugs in his 2005 book, Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big. In his book, Canseco asserted that 85% of major league players took steroids, and named McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Jason Giambi, Ivan Rodriquez, and Juan Gonzales as fellow users.
