Oklahoma’s Republican primary will be held on March 6, 2012, otherwise known as Super Tuesday. Other primaries that day include Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Ohio, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia. Ohio’s 66 delegates will be awarded proportionally.
Latest polls have Rick Santorum leading by 20% on February 20th.
There are 43 delegates at stake in the closed, winner take all, primary.Santorum visited the state recently, drawing a crowd of 4,000, former Speaker Gingrich has plans to visit, as well.
In 2008, McCain won the primary with 36.64% of the vote, to Huckabee’s 33.39%. Romney drew 24.78% of the vote, Ron Paul 3%.
The Oklahoma State Election Board site here. Also of interest, a former Democratic Senator is not backing Obama in their primary, though he also says he may back him in the general election.
Former Sen. David Boren (D-Okla.) said Tuesday that he would lend his efforts to the third-party Americans Elect organization, a group dedicated to building an infrastructure for an outside White House challenge in the 2012 election.
“The country is going to really be in deep trouble if we don’t act soon,” Borentold The New York Times. “I think this is really a cry from many of us who are really concerned for the future of the country.”
The former senator and governor — who now helms the state’s flagship university — said that he was disheartened by the lack of bipartisanship in Washington. Americans Elect has said its ticket will require the eventual presidential nominee to select a running mate from the other party.
