Vice President Joe Biden outrageously told an audience in Danville, Virginia that Republicans are “gonna put ya’ll back in chains.” Danville is a city in which half of the residents are black and has been known for racial tensions in the past, Mitt Romney responded to those remarks at a campaign stop in Ohio by telling the Obama campaign to take their campaign of “division and anger and hate back to Chicago.”
Biden was referring to Wall Street regulations, but the explicit reference to slavery was unmistakable, especially given half of the audience was black and the Obama campaign needs to galvanize the black vote in Virginia to win reelection. The comments were clearly a clear dog-whistle.
“Mr. President, take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago,” Romney said in Ohio on Tuesday night, capping off a bus tour of Ohio’s coal country. “His campaign and his surrogates have made wild and reckless accusations that disgrace the office of the Presidency.”
Romney called Biden’s comments “outrageous” and said those comments made the White House sink “a little bit lower.”
Obama is “intellectually exhausted, out of ideas, and out of energy” so his campaign has resorted to “diversions and distractions” and “demagoguing and defaming others,” said Romney.
He went on to say, Obama wanted to smash America into pieces and then cobble together 51 percent of the vote to win narrowly in November, and that is why the Obama campaign is using such inflammatory tactics to try to achieve their ends.
