Just when you think the government can’t get any crazier comes a loony story from the 1950’s: the Eisenhower administration actually considered whether to nuke the moon in order to deliver a message to the Soviet Union. The Asian News International says today that the US considered a secret project titled “A Study of Lunar Research Flights”; the idea was only rejected when officials thought that it might harm people on earth.
The US would have shot a nuclear missile at the moon, detonating it on the moon’s surface. The flash would have been visible from earth.
Fortunately, the plan was never carried forward. If it had been, how could Newt Gingrich have started a moon colony on the radioactive lunar surface?
