Belcher Threatened to Shoot Girlfriend Two Months Before Murder-Suicide

In another warning sign that wasn’t taken seriously, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher texted about shooting his girlfriend two months before murdering her, then committing suicide. According to a report from Jackson County, Missouri prosecutors, Belcher sent a text message to another one of his girlfriends stating that he would “shoot” Cassandra Perkins, the mother of his child, “if she didn’t leave them alone.” The second girlfriend told police that she thought he wasn’t serious.

Belcher’s mother, Cheryl Shepherd, said that the couple was undergoing “relationship problems due to financial issues associated with Perkins’ spending habits.” Belcher told his second girlfriend that Perkins “knew exactly how to press his buttons and make him angry” and that she “threatened to take all his money and his child if they split up.”

Clearly, the gun was responsible for the shooting. Couldn’t have been the guy with multiple girlfriends and violent tendencies who threatened to kill the mother of his child while enmeshed in an ugly custody dispute.
