Tea Party Detractors Cry Foul After Governor Haley Appoints Rep. Tim Scott to U.S. Senate

This week South Carolina’s Governor Nikki Haley finally announced she had selected U.S. Rep. Tim Scott to fill the U.S. Senate of the departing Jim DeMint.

While the selection of Tim Scott would be consider historic by any standard of diversity, the left is already crying foul and has sought to downplay the appointment because of his connections to the Tea Party Movement. The Republican establishment largely ignored the appointment.

The media sought to ignore the appointment, as both ABC and CBS simply did not report it in their nightly news broadcast. These are the same networks that have allowed liberal political figures and operatives to level the false charge of racism against the Tea Party in the past. The NAACP welcomed the appointment as a step forward for diversity in the U.S. Senate, but voiced concerned that Rep. Scott was not a supporter of their big government agenda.

More militant forces on the Left such as Amos Brown took a more disgraceful tact in attacking the appointment. Mr. Brown took to his twitter account following the announcement to post the following,  “Gee, courtesy of S Carolina GOP, the nation gets Tim Scott an ultra-rightwing, Tea Party devotee US Senator who’s Black only in skin color.” Mr. Brown describes himself as a Man of GOD and radio show host, yet he engages in cowardly attacks because some of us in the Black Community have opinions that run counter to his.

Even the Republican establishment has been silent on the selection on Tim Scott, which is surprising as the establishment seems to forget how poorly it appealed minority voters in the most recent presidential election. Once again, the Republican establishment is a day late and dollar short. The Tea Party Movement has done what all the Rove whiteboards and high paid consultants have not been able to since 2006. In reality, the establishment sees the appointment as a slap in the face to them and thus no official statement was made.

Those of us in the Tea Party Movement are delighted with Tim Scott’s appointment, as it strikes another blow at the left, the media and the Republican establishment, groups that have all leveled false charges against the Tea party. It is only the Tea Party Movement that could convince a Governor from the Old South (who is a minority herself and Tea Party favorite) to appoint a black man to a Senate seat once held by a Dixiecrat.  When the left and Republican establishment can trump that, then they might have something to talk about. The Tea Party does not need to highlight diversity because grassroots movements are by their very nature, diversity at work.
