Texas Governor Rick Perry is courting California’s businesses by launching ads on radio that delineate the difference between California’s anti-business climate and the pro-business attitude of Texas. The ads are running all over the state, from San Francisco and Sacramento south to Los Angeles, San Diego and the Inland Empire area.
The ad, which runs 30 seconds, features Perry asserting, “Building a business is tough, but I hear building a business in California is next to impossible. This is Texas Gov. Rick Perry, and I have a message for California businesses: Come check out Texas.”
Perry adds that Chief Executive has named Texas the Best State for Business eight years in a row, and that the cost of doing business in California is 6.3% more than the national average while the cost in Texas is 4.6% below it.
Perry’s office says that in the time Jerry Brown has been governor of California, roughly 35 companies have either moved to Texas from California or expanded their California business to include Texas.
Kish Rajan, the director of Brown’s Office of Business and Economic Development, protested, “I can understand why Rick Perry is interested in California. We were the national jobs leader for most of the last year with 257,000 new private sector jobs.Real job creation comes from California’s history as a national leader in start-ups and the expansion of homegrown businesses.”
But Perry is undisturbed, pointing to California’s tax hikes. On Twitter, he pitched golfer Phil Mickelson, who has been forthright about his disenchantment with California’s taxes, tweeting, “Hey Phil….Texas is home to liberty and low taxes…we would love to have you as well!!”
