House Republicans Propose $30 Million per Year for Officers in Schools

Freshman Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) has joined six other GOP House members to propose legislation that would place police officers in schools across the nation to help protect children. The legislation would cost $30 million and is called The Protect America’s Schools Act.

Meadows minced no words, saying, “According to a recent Gallup poll, 53 percent of Americans believe that increasing police presence at schools would be very effective in preventing future tragedies. After speaking to local law enforcement, superintendents, and principals in my district, I believe this is the best path forward.”

The Protect America’s Schools Act, H.R. 751, would reestablish funding for the Cops in Schools grant program for the first time since 2005. As much as $30 million per year of the funding would be used for the police officers in the schools.

Although Meadows said the legislation is “bipartisan,” as the idea was first offered during the Clinton Administration, times have changed. No Democrats have offered to sponsor it; only Meadows and his GOP colleagues Reps. Gus Bilirakis (FL), William Cassidy (LA), David Joyce (OH), Cynthia Lummis (CO), Rich Nugent (FL), and Tom Rooney (FL).
