Amendment Passed Requiring DHS to Explain Mass Ammo Orders to Congress

Late on June 5, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) added an amendment to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spending bill that will require the DHS to come to Congress before placing large ammunition orders in the future. 

According to The Hill, the amendment requires DHS to report details concerning size of ammo orders, as well as why such orders are needed. “This is a responsible amendment which ensures that Congress and the American people are aware of the necessity and cost of ammunition prior to entering into new contracts for procurement,” Meadows said. 

Meadows was countered by Rep. John Carter (R-TX), who said that DHS officials had already explained themselves on current ammo orders, making it clear they were only purchasing in bulk “to keep costs down.”

Nonetheless, Meadows’ amendment passed 234-192. Although it will not affect current DHS ammo orders, it will require the DHS to report to Congress before placing mass orders in the future.
