Eigth Grader Facing Jail over NRA T-shirt Threatened with Gag Order

Prosecutors in the case against 8th grader Jared Marcum pushed for an “emergency gag order” on June 24.

Huntington WV’s WOWKTV.com reports that prosecutors Christopher White and Sabrina Deskins asked for the order because it was for “Jared’s better interest.”

However, Marcum’s attorney Ben White said he believes the prosecution filed a request for a gag order because they want “to take [the case] out of the court of public opinion.” White said he found it strange the prosecutors claimed to be motivated by concern for Marcum: “These are the same individuals that are trying to prosecute him, so as far as them knowing what is in his better interest, I have a lot of questions about that.”

At the end of the day, the prosecutors relented on their push for a gag order “on the condition that [Marcum’s] parents waive the confidentiality that bars prosecutors from speaking freely about his case, due to him being a minor.”

Marcum’s case is set to go to trial in two weeks.
