La Raza President: Path to Citizenship 'Threshold' Issue

The president of the National Council of La Raza said on Tuesday that a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants is a “threshold” issue for Hispanic voters.

Janet Murguía made her remarks while addressing La Raza’s annual convention in New Orleans.

She claimed that granting a path to citizenship for at least 11 million illegal immigrants would be the “threshold issue” that Republicans would reportedly “have to cross to start to win back large numbers of Latino voters.”

Hispanic groups, in addition to big business groups and consultants in favor of comprehensive immigration reform, have pressured Republicans with similar advice. Comprehensive immigration reform, though, only ranks third or fourth among the top priorities of registered Hispanic voters, according to recent polling.
