Just hours before state Senate President John Morse (D-Colorado Springs) conceded, the DNC was already claiming anti-recall voters faced “voter suppression” and urged pro-Morse and pro-Giron voters not to let voter suppression win.
The September 10 DNC tweet said: “Don’t let voter suppression win in Colorado! Help GOTV and spread the word to vote NO.”
WeaselZippers found and posted the tweet for the world to see, and they also linked to a Huffington Post column in which “Democrats decry [the] voting process in Colorado recall.”
On Wednesday morning, the official Twitter account of the Democratic Party tweeted a link to a statement from DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz along with the following quote:
In the days before the September 10 vote, one Democrat official laid the groundwork for these accusations by describing the recalls as “a race made up of an endless number of things that will just confuse voters and have an effect on the election itself.” One of the “endless things” was allegedly the inability to vote by mail, which anti-recall forces say limited the number of voters who could support Morse and Giron.
Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper (D) fueled these voter suppression conspiracies when he intimated that anti-recall voters who somehow made it to the polls were being harassed and confused once they arrived: “We are hearing disturbing reports that some people are being encouraged to go to the polls, not to legitimately vote, but to disrupt the process.”
