Rep. Steve King: Remain 'Ever Vigilant' Against Amnesty

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) warned the American people on Sunday evening to remain “ever vigilant” about GOP establishment efforts to grant amnesty to America’s illegal immigrants.

King’s warning came during an appearance on Breitbart News Sunday with Stephen K. Bannon on Sirius/XM Patriot. King said House GOP leadership has shown signs it is quietly still committed to attempting to save the Senate’s immigration bill by passing piecemeal step-by-step immigration bills, then cobbling them together in a conference committee with the Senate.

“At a meeting last week, I refreshed people on our priorities,” King said. “I said the worst piece of legislation that has passed in our lifetimes is Obamacare, but worse than that is the Gang of Eight bill if it should become law. So we can’t take our eyes completely off the ball.”

King thanked Breitbart News for exposing House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s meeting last week with amnesty advocates as a government shutdown looms, because, he said, information “doesn’t always get around through the back channels of the Hill.”

“As I’ve watched this, the immigration issue has been tamped down,” King said. “Proponents of amnesty went out into the countryside in August thinking they were going to gin up all of this support.”

They failed, King said. Now, the plan is to run out the establishment’s clock. “We’re through September,” King said. “Each day that goes by we’re better off. If we can get through October, then it’s November and December. But we’re working our way through that and if we get this into an election year, then maybe it drips away.”

King said that “it still is a concern” that the GOP establishment may try to get to a conference with the Senate bill. “If I’ve heard anything, a little piece of information, is that leadership is looking to a date near Thanksgiving to try to move something,” King said. “Now there are four pieces out there from the Judiciary Committee, one from the Homeland Security Committee. And then there is Cantor’s KIDS Act, which is not a bill yet. We have not seen it in public yet. We have had a hearing on something like that, which I thought was a stacked hearing and said so. Stuff is working behind the scenes and if they can find any void in our agenda in a matter of few days, then bring something to the floor, [they will]. So I’d say [be] ever vigilant. We’ve come too far in this battle for the rule of law and against amnesty to let up our guard now, even though we’ve got to focus on the CR here in the next few days.”
