CA Obamacare Exchange Prepares to Breach Privacy

With thousands of Californian enrollees in Obamacare in danger of losing their insurance come January 1 thanks to a paperwork and online backlog, California’s Obamacare exchange, Covered California, is preparing to release personal information about applicants in violation of privacy rules. Because thousands of Californians applied for Obamacare by giving only their name and insurance agent, Covered California is now sending contact information to private insurance agents to fill in the rest of the applications.

Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsome warned that allowing insurance agents to contact potential clients would violate the law: “The decision to share private information with insurance agents without the consent of Californians is a serious mistake and should be rectified immediately.” But thousands of Californians are also expecting their insurance to kick in on January 1, and may be in for a rude awakening if they are not contacted.
