Teachers' Union Calls for More Gun Laws After Twelve-Year-Old Breaks Gun Laws

On January 14th, a twelve-year-old New Mexican boy brought a shotgun onto the Roswell Middle School campus and “wounded two classmates” before being subdued. 

According to ABCNews, he snuck the weapon on campus by hiding it in a band instrument case.

Although he broke numerous laws to get the gun to school – it was illegal for him to posses, illegal to conceal, and illegal to have on a school campus – American Federation of Teachers New Mexico President Stephanie Ly called for more gun laws just hours after the shooting took place:

Our hearts go out to the students, families, and staff at Roswell Middle School and the community they serve. While we don’t have all the details yet, today’s tragedy is the latest reminder that we all have a duty to every child to provide safe and secure public schools, which should be sanctuaries for our children. We must do everything we can, including working to adopt common-sense gun laws, to keep all weapons off of school property and ensure the safety of children and school employees. 

Since possessing a gun at age twelve is already against the law, as is concealing an illegally possessed gun and bringing that gun onto campus, what new laws would the teachers’ union like to see passed?
