On February 11th, Mississippi representatives overwhelmingly supported legislation protecting the exercise of concealed carry, prohibiting the destruction of firearms obtained through local government buyback programs, and expanding protection against firearm confiscation “during a state of emergency or natural disaster.”
According to the NRA-ILA, State Representative Andy Gipson (R-Rankin, Simpson & Smith Counties) put forth House Bill 314 to “[clarify] limits on the authority of municipalities and counties to restrict the carrying of firearms.” It also provides “remedy” to citizens “adversely impacted” by restrictions and/or “ordinances enacted outside the scope of this authority.” HB 314 passed 85 to 33.
State Representative Gary Chism (R-Clay, Lowndes & Oktibbeha Counties) put forth House Bill 485 to “prohibit the destruction of firearms acquired by local governments as a result of gun ‘buyback’ programs.” HB 485 passed unanimously.
State Representative Dennis DeBar (R-Forrest, George, Greene, Perry & Wayne Counties) put forth House Bill 705 to “expand protections against the confiscation of lawfully-possessed firearms during a state of emergency or natural disaster.” HB 705 passed by a margin of 112 to 2.
