Diversity 'Happy Hour' Canceled After Excluding White Staffers

Organizers of a South Puget Sound Community College diversity-building “happy hour” canceled the event after it was learned they had excluded white staffers.

According to Seattle’s King 5 Television, a group of the college’s employees called, “Staff, Faculty, and Administrators of Color” sent out an email about the happy hour which explicitly stated that “white people were not invited.”

The email suggested that those who wanted to include white people in diversity-building should organize their own event: “If you want to create space for white folks to meet and work on racism, white supremacy, and white privilege to better our campus community and yourselves, please feel free to do just that.”

Karama Blackhorn is the college’s Diversity and Equity Center program’s director. She helped write the email and while she admits that it could have been worded differently, she “maintains the staff members of color would have a more honest discussion about race without white employees” around.
