A 4.7-magnitude earthquake hit west Los Angeles this morning shortly before 6:30 a.m., waking the city up with a start and rocking vehicles back and forth during the morning commute. No significant damage was reported.

According to Dr. Lucy Jones of the U.S. Geological Survey, quoted by CBS News’ L.A. affiliate, “Monday’s tremor is the largest earthquake in Los Angeles since the region stopped having aftershocks from the 1994 Northridge quake.”

Update: The earthquake was later downgraded to a 4.4-magnitude tremor, the Los Angeles Times reports. News anchors on live television hid under their desks, and social media lit up with commentary about the quake, dubbed the “Shamrock Shake” for St. Patrick’s Day. The epicenter was near the intersection of Mulholland Drive with the 405 freeway, one of the most heavily-traveled arteries in the city.
The force of the earthquake was enough to send household items clattering to the floor in homes across the region. Here is the scene on this reporter’s floor this morning, where baby pictures fell off a bookshelf.
