GOP Representatives Lash Out against Military Gun-Free Zones

On April 3rd, Representatives Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Mike McCaul (R-TX), and Steve Stockman (R-TX) came out against the military gun-free zones which prevent the carrying of guns for self-defense on various posts and bases.

Speaking to Truth Revolt, Gohmert said:

Soldiers should have … the ability to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon on a military installation. It seems ridiculous to forbid people from getting a concealed carry permit who are qualified to use weapons on that installation.

Concealed carry acts as a deterrent to those who always choose gun free zones as the target of their heinous acts.

According to Politco, McCaul said, “Al Qaeda and terrorists and jihadists are targeting our military bases. That is a fact.” He continued, “The problem here, and with Fort Hood … was that [the soldiers] couldn’t defend themselves because they were not allowed to carry weapons.” He said that he believes those who are trained for combat should be allowed to carry firearms. He also believes Congress needs to revisit this issue so that soldiers can arm themselves for self-defense.

Appearing on Fox News, Stockman said:

We’ve had military men carrying weapons on bases for hundreds of years, and [it has] only been 20 years since we had this policy [against carrying guns, which] was supported by an anti-gun President. And, I might add, if you look at the history overall, we’ve had an increase in shootings on bases since the prohibition of military being able to defend themselves.

On April 3rd, Brietbart News reported the original directive barring the carrying of guns on bases was signed during the last months of George H.W. Bush’s presidency. Bill Clinton then revised and implemented it in the third month of his presidency. The result is the military gun-free zones currently in existence.
