During a press conference in the Rose Garden with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Obama explained that he was troubled by the revelations made by Edward Snowden about the National Security Agency spying on her.
Obama said that Merkel was “one of [his] closest friends on the world stage,” adding, “It has pained me to see the degree to which the Snowden disclosures have created strains in the relationship.”
Obama also said that he had a history of supporting reform in the surveillance community and vowed reforms during his presidency.
He claimed, too, that he had ordered the intelligence agencies to take into consideration the privacy interests of world citizens, calling it an “unprecedented move.”
“Ordinary Germans are not subject to continual surveillance, are not subject to a whole range of bulk data gathering,” Obama asserted.
