Elderly Homeowner Retrieves Gun, Leaves Intruder Dead in Driveway

On May 8th, an “elderly” homeowner in St. Clair County, Illinois, shot an intruder whom police discovered dead in the driveway after responding to a 911 call.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “the widower in his 70s who lived alone… called 911 at 12:40 pm to report a burglary in progress.” Sheriff Rick Watson said police arrived to find “a man laying in the driveway. He’s not breathing; he’s deceased.”

Watson said the homeowner “heard glass breaking in the rear of the house,” that “someone was trying to break in.” The elderly man retrieved his handgun and “fired one shot.” He told police he was not sure if he hit the intruder because the intruder took off in one direction and the rattled homeowner ran in the other.

Sheriff Watson said the alleged intruder “had no identification.”

“We don’t know who this guy is,” Watson added.
