A powerful Spring storm draped Denver and other parts of Colorado and Wyoming with snow up to three feet in depth in some places on Mother’s Day and into Monday.
It was the same severe weather pattern that brought tornado warnings in a wide swath from Houston, Texas to Detroit, Michigan.
The National Weather Service issued a severe winter storm warning on Sunday for Northern Colorado and parts of Wyoming as the storm dropped up to a foot of wet, heavy snow on the region.
The weather service also warned that this will not be a one-off occurrence. Meteorologist Kyle Fredin said, “it’s going to be kind of the same thing pretty much through the end of June.”
The storm was a key factor in a seven-car pileup on Sunday that occurred on U.S. 258 near the town of Doubleheader.
Snows also caused delays at Denver’s International Airport.
Meanwhile tornados destroyed property in Nebraska and Iowa over Mother’s Day weekend into early Monday morning.
Near the Nebraska towns of Sutton and Cordova, homes and outbuildings were destroyed by the twisters.
Nearly 17,000 customers lost power in Omaha, Nebraska due to the storms and high winds.
Some of the worst damage was in the small town of Beaver Crossing, Nebraska where much of the town was wiped out. There were no reports of injuries.
Parts of southwestern Iowa was beset with quarter-sized hail on Sunday causing wide-spread damage.
