Flashback: In 2009, Sec. Eric Shinseki Blamed Leadership for Veterans Affairs Backlogs

In 2009, Veterans Affairs Sec. Eric Shinseki vowed during his Senate confirmation hearings that the patient backlogs at Veterans Affairs would be among his top priorities once he was confirmed for the position.

Shinseki suggested that faulty leadership was the root of the problem, and vowed to work with the Department of Defense to address the issues.

Shinseki explained that as Secretary of Veterans affairs, he would change the culture of the agency.

A critic of the Iraq War under President Bush, Shinseki was chosen by Obama to lead Veterans Affairs in December 2008.
