Chicago Trib: Emanuel's Gun Control Won't 'Crimp Any Thug's Lifestyle'

In reporting on Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s latest gun control push, Chicago Tribune columnist Eric Zorn made clear Emanuel’s new rule won’t “crimp any thug’s lifestyle.”

If passed, the rules will only affect law-abiding gun owners.

Zorn was focusing on Emanuel’s desired “one-gun-a-month” purchase limit for Chicagoans.

He wrote: “Preventing Chicagoans from legally buying more than 13 pistols a year without leaving town seems unlikely to crimp any thug’s lifestyle, much less reduce the levels of carnage in our streets.”

Zorn pointed to a 1996 Journal of the American Medical Association analysis that concluded, “restricting handgun purchases to one per month is an effective means of disrupting the illegal interstate transfer of firearms.” He explained that a number of states jumped on board with the idea then, only to repeal the one-gun-a-month bans when they realized the laws impacted law-abiding citizens more than criminals.

The only states in which such one-gun-a-month laws still persist are California, Maryland, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia.
