'Execution-Style' Shooting in Newark, NJ Kills 17-Year-Old Cheerleader

NEWARK, N.J., July 2 (UPI) — Authorities in Newark are searching for witnesses and offering a $12,000 reward for any information about the Sunday shooting death of a local teenager.

Cheyanne Bond, 17, and an unidentified 17-year-old male were shot on the evening of June 30 while walking near a local park. The teenage boy survived and is being treated for his injuries, but Bond did not.

According to uncle Michael Bond, investigators told him his niece was killed with brutal efficiency, but the motive remains unclear.

“They told her to get on her knees and they shot her in the head execution style,” Michael Bond explained to CBS New York. “Just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The former cheerleader had graduated from Malcolm X Shabazz High School less than two weeks prior to Sunday’s shooting and was planning to study nursing at Union County College in the fall. Principal Gemar Mills remembered her as a “good kid” who was both “quiet” and “fun.”

“Ten days, man. Ten days ago she was a happy young girl just ready to live her life and graduate from high school.”
