43 Shot, 5 Killed in Chicago as Weekend Temperatures Hit Summer Highs

As temperatures approached summer highs during the past weekend, shootings in the Windy City rose commensurately resulting in 43 shootings and five deaths. One of those killed was a 13-year-old boy.

By Saturday morning, two had died and 14 were wounded as the warm weekend started.

In once incident on Friday evening, three men were shot and one killed in a barber shop in the city’s Englewood neighborhood. The man who died was 22-year-old Deandre Ellis. All involved had gang ties.

Two more, both with gang ties, were shot and killed on Saturday.

Another murder occurred Sunday evening in the South Side neighborhood of Chicago Lawn when 13-year-old Demureye Macon was found lying on a sidewalk in the 6600 block of South Talman Avenue. He had one wound to his torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“I can’t breathe. I still can’t breathe,” Demureye’s mother said to the media on Sunday evening. “It’s like someone grabbing my heart and squeezing it. It’s like this is your life, this is your heart, this is what you get.”

This weekend’s violence brings September’s death toll to 43, with 197 wounded.
