The initial test results of a Yale graduate student who developed Ebola-like symptoms have come back negative, Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) announced just before 5:00 p.m. EDT Thursday. YNHH must still wait for official confirmation of the test results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
According to Yale Daily News, however, while university administrators have insisted the patient did not have contact with the Ebola virus, Yale Medical School Dean Robert Alpern said the patient “did have contact with one person who eventually developed Ebola.”
A source familiar with the patient said the patient came in direct contact with NBC cameraman Ashoka Mukpo, who was diagnosed with Ebola on October 1. The patient reportedly said that contact came the day before Mukpo developed symptoms. NBC has declined to comment on the situation.
The student will continue to be monitored until confirmation of the negative test results comes from CDC.
“All present protocols, including the isolation order issued by DPH Commissioner Dr. Jewel Mullen today, will remain in place pending the results of laboratory testing at the CDC,” said a statement by Dana Marnane, director of public relations and communications for the YNHH.
